Notably, although published analyses did not examine the effect of Happify Health on perceived stress directly, perceived stress was included as 1 of 3 components for a resilience index, which significantly decreased in users who competed at least two activities per week for 8 weeks [81,82]; unpublished data indicate that perceived stress specifically decreased along with resilience (Parks, AC, unpublished data, December 2018).

Individuals who consented were then randomly assigned to use the Happify Health platform or a corresponding psychoeducation control for 8 weeks (see Parks and Boucher [56] for more discussion of this study). We then invited participants who had been assigned to the active intervention to participate in this focus group if they had completed at least 16 activities on Happify Health (ie, the recommended dosage) and completed the pre- and posttest measures in the pilot study.

Effect of Brief Biofeedback via a Smartphone App on Stress Recovery: Randomized Experimental Study
Salivettes were stored at –80°C until batch analysis at the end of data collection at the laboratory of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Salivary Bioscience Research (University of California Irvine, Irvine, California). Before assaying, the samples were thawed for an hour to return them to room temperature. For cortisol, all samples were assayed in duplicate by using an expanded-range high-sensitivity salivary cortisol enzyme immunoassay kit (Salimetrics, LLC, State College, Pennsylvania).

Parks et al [19] provide a thoughtful analysis of the type of lay people that free OPPIs appeal to, a group that the authors refer to as Web-based happiness seekers. These authors draw 3 main conclusions. First, they found that roughly half of the seekers are somewhat happy people intending to achieve greater happiness, but that the other half are quite distressed and some might even be experiencing a mental health condition.
