Associate (Section) Editors for JMIR
JMIR is broadening its pool of associate editors (we call them section editors) and is looking for reputable scientists/academics with an interest in technology in health care (or methodological interests, e.g. statisticians), and experience in writing and editing scholarly manuscripts. Applicants will usually have an appointment at an academic or research institution, and a publication record (in JMIR and/or other leading biomedical journals). The role of section editors (associate editors) is to guide papers through the peer-review process.
Responsibilities and expectations:
- guide a number of submissions per year through the review/editing process, from initial vetting to decision (i.e. select peer-reviewers, summarize the comments, communicate with the authors, if required, do some scientific editing before the manuscript is forwarded to the copyeditor [e.g. rewriting the abstract] etc). Section editors typically define a few topics or keywords and will receive articles which match their interests. At any time they will be able to turn down an assignment. We are also working on an infrastructure where section editors can see a list of new unassigned submissions and pick those they are interested in.
- Associate editors should agree to take on at least 6 submissions per year, and to make decisions within 6 weeks after submission.

- The decision to join the editorial board of JMIR should be driven by an intrinsic motivation to advance the field of eHealth, and to promote open access to research findings. I.e., it should not be about money. However, starting in 2009, we will be in a position to pay a small honorarium (currently more a token of appreciation) for each assigned article that editors see through the submission process (e.g. $100 per accepted article, less for articles that have been rejected).
- Some additional perks include the possibility to publish commentaries, news articles, and editorials for free (Article Processing Fees are waived)
