Society for the Internet in Medicine designates the Journal of Medical Internet Research as its Official Journal
August 13, 2003 The Journal of Medical Internet Research (http://www.jmir.org/, JMIR) and the Society for the Internet in Medicine (http://www.internet-in-medicine.org/, SIM) today announced an agreement to designate the Journal of Medical Internet Research as Official Journal of the Society for the Internet in Medicine.
"We chose the Journal of Medical Internet Research as the new official Journal of the Society for Internet in Medicine because it is simply the best peer-reviewed e-health journal out there and because the editorial board, of which many are Society members, has shown leadership in making e-health research an accepted interdisciplinary area of scientific inquiry." Says Dr Hans van der Slikke, Chair of the Society for Internet in Medicine, who is also a practicing obstetrician/gynaecologist at the VU university medical center of Amsterdam. "Not only does the journal publish high-quality articles on Internet and Medicine, but it also runs under an open access model, demonstrating the power of the Internet in disseminating information to a large international audience free of charge for readers. We encourage our members to submit their research to this prestigious journal, van der Slikke emphasizes. JMIR has been a pioneer in open access publishing, making all its articles freely available on the web, while covering the costs of publication through authorship fees. Under the new agreement, SIM members will enjoy a 20% discount on article processing fees. Work accepted for oral presentation at one of SIMs annual MEDNET conferences can be published for a 50% fee reduction. The best papers from MEDNET will be invited to be published in JMIR with article processing fees waived. The agreement also marks the end of SIM's relationship with Taylor & Francis' "Medical Informatics & The Internet in Medicine", which used to be the official Journal of SIM.
"I am very excited about this agreement with SIM", says JMIR editor-in-chief and publisher Dr. Gunther Eysenbach, who is also an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto and a Senior Scientist at the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation. "The Society is perhaps best known for its annual MEDNET conferences, where researchers present exactly the kind of research on implications of the Internet on medicine and web applications for health care, the Journal wishes to publish.", says Eysenbach. "That a Society with high scientific standards exchanges a subscription-based journal for an open access journal also demonstrates that more and more scientists are accepting and supporting the open access movement." SIM is the second association which endorses the Journal as official journal. JMIR continues to be the designated Official Journal of the Internet Healthcare Coalition, which announced a similar arrangement with JMIR 8 months ago, during the MEDNET2002 conference in Amsterdam.
